Digital Recording Intensive
with Joseph L Young
Friday, 9:00 - Noon and 1:00 - 4:00 pm
If you’ve ever wanted to record your own music, from solo flute to fully-embellished musical pieces, Joseph is going to show you how he does it by walking you through the basics of digital recording and production. This will be a fully hands-on experience for each attendee, utilizing the software Cakewalk by BandLab on your own PC-based laptop (https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk/). This FREE software is a fully-featured digital audio and MIDI program, and is the same software that Joseph used to create all six of his professionally-produced flute and saxophone albums. Even though we’ll be using one specific software in the workshop, much of the information on recording and editing in a computer environment can be applied to other programs.
We’ll start with basic recording techniques, what mics to use and how to use them, how to hook them up to your computer, and how to record using the software. Then we’ll play with editing, adding reverb and delay effects, multi-tracking, file maintenance, adding VST Soft synths (background), and how to integrate other hardware gadgets with the software.
You will get the most hands-on experience by downloading Cakewalk by BandLab to your PC-laptop (sorry, not available for Mac/Apple) and bringing it with you to the workshop. Also bring headphones or earbuds, and an interface and microphone if you have them. If this is not possible, you can still follow along on Joe’s laptop (which will be projected onto a big screen) and apply much of the other information to your own recording program. Email Joe at jyoung@josephlyoung.com for any technical assistance ahead of time so he can help you prepare.
