Rona Yellow Robe
Introduction to the Native American Flute
Rona Yellow Robe is a Cree and African American woman, born and raised in Havre, Montana, and an enrolled member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy, Montana. She picked up her first flute in 2002, and from that moment, her life was forever
changed.
What began as desire and curiosity soon became a calling — a musical and spiritual journey that continues to shape who she is today. Through her voice, her gift in storytelling, her Native American flutes, and her heartfelt presence, she share what she feels most deeply: the beauty of love, healing, and connection.
Over the years, Rona has recorded several award-winning albums, including Voice of the Trees, The Gathering, Lighting Our Way, Shoot for the Moon, and Sunday’s Child. Each project has been created with the intention to inspire, uplift, and fill the listener with peace and hope.
Rona was honored to receive the Native American Music Award for Flutist of the Year, and held the title in 2014, 2015, and 2016. My song Voice of the Trees was nominated for Song of the Year, and her albums have received nominations for Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Another special recognition came when her song Caterpillar & Butterfly received the North American Indigenous Flute Player Award from the Native American Style Flute Association.
Rona’s music has carried her across the country and around the world — performing at tribal gatherings, festivals, schools, museums, and sacred ceremonies. Whether she is honoring our veterans, celebrating life, or offering comfort at memorials, she sees each performance as a prayer — a moment to share love, peace, and light through her Native American flutes.
For nearly two decades, Rona has brought her flutes into hospice settings, offering music as a companion in moments of transition and healing. Rona’s work with hospice communities has taught her that music can touch the soul in ways words cannot — it becomes a bridge between the seen and the unseen, a breath of comfort and grace.
Rona’s purpose and mission with her music also serves to advocate for the awareness of the MMIWM&C(Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Men, & Children). She works with Canada's Truth and Reconciliation, which brings awareness to the healing of our Elders and those of us affected by cultural genocide and intergenerational trauma by the Indian Residential schools. She also works with tribes and organizations to bringing support and awareness about cancer and diabetes. These are missions that are personal, and near and dear to her heart.
These missions are personal, and near and dear to her heart. Rona often says, “I will perform for five or for fifteen hundred.” And I have — because for me, it’s never about the size of the audience; it’s about the intention behind every song I sing and every note I play. My music is created with purpose to bless lives, to awaken peace, and to remind each listener that within every heart there is a song waiting to be heard — one of joy, love, healing, and belonging. ~Rona Yellow Robe

Gilbert Levy
Facilitator
Gilbert’s musical journey started early at the age of seven when he began to play the piano. He received his first drum set for his Bar Mitzvah and was launched for life. By the age of 18, he was performing professionally on Bourbon Street in his hometown of New Orleans and soon after, had the distinction of hiring Wynton and Branford Marsalis for some of their first gigs while they were still in high school.
At 28, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his musical endeavors. Of significance during that time was that he discovered North Indian music and began to study tabla drums. (This move was hastened by the fact that one could not practice a drum set in a small apartment.) Discovering hand drums changed his life. All of a sudden, he was in different musical environments that were much closer to the music he loved, and which led him to meet Suzanne Teng who was also involved in the world music scene.
After many years as an in-demand world music drummer in the Los Angeles scene, he developed a significant hand injury. Gilbert then had to learn to play left-handed, and the injury caused him to learn different instruments than he’d played before. Also at this time, he embraced his keyboard and stringed instrument skills, leading him to discover a new voice that was more musically and compositionally based.
Gilbert and Suzanne have released seven critically acclaimed albums. They have won numerous international awards, including the Independent Music Awards (twice), International Acoustic Music Awards, Los Angeles Music Awards, New Mexico Music Awards, Native America Style Flute Awards Album of the Year, Akademia Music Awards, Global Music Awards (Gold Medal), Peace Song Awards, and InterContinental Music Awards.
